American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics

The American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (usually referred to as the AIAA, pronounced "A-I-double-A") is the primary professional society in the field of aeronautical and astronautical engineering. It publishes a number of technical journals, including the Journal of Spacecraft and Rockets, and a monthly general interest magazine, Aerospace America, and organizes a number of conferences on space engineering.

The AIAA was created when the American Rocket Society (founded as the American Interplanetary Society in 1930), and the Institute of Aerospace Sciences (founded as the Institute of Aeronautical Sciences in 1932) merged in 1963.

In January 2002, the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) Technical Activities Committee (TAC) approved the formation of a new AIAA Space Colonization Technical Committee, under the AIAA Space and Missiles Group.

The mission of the SCTC is to promote the identification and development of advanced concepts, science, and technology that will support, enhance and enable permanent human presence in space.

The SCTC has developed a position statement which recommends specific research, development, technology and engineering goals be implemented in order to establish a Moon base by 2015 and open new frontiers to human space exploration.

The SCTC believes that the Lunar base will be an ideal testbed for opening new frontiers to human exploration by maximally employing commercial and private products and services.
