Lavatubes are a good choice for a first generation space habitat on the moon becaues they provide a ready made structure. It is possible to seal the microscopic cracks in surface of the walls of the lavatube, and thus provide an air tight environment which can be a shirt sleeve environment. Living in a lavatube provides many advantages.
Benefits
- There is substantual shielding due to having some meters of stone between you and the outside. This is good against micrometerorites and radiation.
- There is heat insulation because you are underground.
