SMART-1 (Small Missions for Advanced Research in Technology -1) was a small European lunar orbiter. Its unusual feature was the use of ion propulsion for the trans-lunar trajectory and orbital insertion. It launched in September, 2003, and impacted on the moon in September, 2005. It carried several sophisticated instruments, including high resolution imager.
