The X-Prize organization is currently running a contest with a 30 million dollar prize for the first private lunar rover.

X-Prize Lunar Lander Challenge [1]

The winner must minimally:

  1. Safely land a robot on the surface of the Moon
  2. Travel 500 meters
  3. Send images and data to Earth
  4. Be 90% privately funded
  5. Complete by December 31, 2014
