The Artemis Project was founded in 1994 by Greg Bennett in a discussion forum in response to an article he had written in Analog. Its goal is to colonize Luna using tourism an entertainment dollars.

Individuals can not join the Artemis Project. Companies weer allowed to join as program participants, although it has been some time since the most recent addition or founding of a project participant.

Companies spawned by the Artemis Project include CyberTeams, TransOrbital, and Village Networking Limited. The company at the center of the project is The Lunar Resources Company.

The Artemis Society International (ASI) was founded for individuals to join and participate in the Artemis Project. In 2000 with the founding of the Moon Society, all members of ASI became members of the Moon Society.
