The National Space Institute was a space advocacy group established by Wernher von Braun in 1974,initially as the National Space Association. It was headquartered over the years at various addresses in the metropolitan Washington,DC area.

Hugh Downs succeeded von Braun as president, and was in turn succeeded by Ben Bova, who negotiated a merger with the L5 Society.Shortly before the merger was consummated, the NSI changed its name to National Space Society at Bova's insistence, and this name has been used since by the merged organization.

It is,however,an oversimplification clearly contradicted by the historical record to say that the NSI and L5 merged to become the NSS.
