Quotes and Short Reviews

Here are a few quotes and a reviews of variety of cultural materials that will provide inspiration for space settlement.

Song Lyrics:

Songs can be absolutely critical to building a movement. Some powerful examples include: "Amazing Grace" for the abolitionist movement and "We Shall Overcome" for the American civil rights movement. We need to find our song.

  • Russell Watson, "Where My Heart Will Take Me (The Enterprise Theme)", (Addax Music Co., 2002), [Lyric]
It´s been a long road, getting from there to here.
It´s been a long time, but my time is finally near.
And I can feel the change in the wind right now. Nothing´s in my way.
And they´re not gonna hold me down no more, no they´re not gonna hold me down.

This is the first Star Trek theme with decent lyrics. It has real power to generate a vision of success associated with the movement of the human race out into space. All such movements must have a song.

For a real hoot sometime, look up the lyric to the original Star Trek series theme. It is so bad that it is camp. Tom Riley --Jriley 06:38, 7 March 2007 (PST)

  • Don Henley, "The boys of summer", [Lyric]
Out on the road today, I saw a DEADHEAD sticker on a Cadillac
A little voice Inside my head said, "Don't look back. You can never look back."
I thought I knew what love was
What did I know?
Those days are gone forever
I should just let them go but-

This is a simple love song about a summer love as felt at the end of the summer. The singer thinks he should let it go but he cannot quite make himself do it. This is the best description I have ever heard of our relationship to Apollo to the Moon. The entire force of this wiki hangs on that but-. Tom Riley --Jriley 06:38, 7 March 2007 (PST)

  • Bob Dylan, "I'm alright Ma", [Lyric]
He not busy being born,
Is busy dying.

As a civilization either we are going forward or we are going backwards. There is no treading water. Either we move out into space or we die on this rock. Tom Riley --Jriley 06:38, 7 March 2007 (PST)

  • Pat Humphries, Song: "Swimming to the Other Side", from the album: "Hands", (Appleseed Recording, 2001), [Lyric]
I am alone and I am searching
Hungering for answers in my time
I am balanced at the brink of wisdom
I'm impatient to receive a sign
I move forward with my senses open
Imperfection it be my crime
In humility I will listen,
We're all Swimming to the Other Side

I feel this song rises to the level of an anthem for our new age just as "We Shall Overcome" was the anthem of the civil rights movement. It is that good. We need one this good for our adventure. Tom Riley --Jriley 06:38, 7 March 2007 (PST)

Quotes

  • Alfred, Lord Tennyson, "Ulysses"
... my purpose holds to sail beyond the sunset,
and the baths of all the western stars, until I die.
It may be that the gulfs will wash us down.
It may be we shall touch the Happy Isles,
and see the great Achilles, whom we knew.
Though much is taken,
much abides;
and though we are not now that strength which in the old days moved earth and heaven;
that which we are, we are; one equal-temper of heroic hearts, ...

  • Winston S. Churchill, "Their Finest Hour Speech", House of Commons, May 1940
Hitler knows that he will have to break us in this Island or lose the war. If we can stand up to him, all Europe may be free and the life of the world may move forward into broad, sunlit uplands. But if we fail, then the whole world, including the United States, including all that we have known and cared for, will sink into the abyss of a new Dark Age made more sinister, and perhaps more protracted, by the lights of perverted science.
Let us therefore brace ourselves to our duties, and so bear ourselves that if the British Empire and its Commonwealth last for a thousand years, men will still say, 'This was their finest hour.

This quote is the source of the description of the lunar highlands as broad, sunlit uplands in our stories. (emphases added). Tom Riley --Jriley 06:38, 7 March 2007 (PST)
